A key action of A Strategic Blueprint for Queensland’s North West Minerals Province is the development of the North West Queensland Economic Diversification Strategy.
The department is leading the development of the strategy in collaboration with other agencies, local government and key stakeholders.
The monsoon event of February 2019 provided a challenging start to the year. Recovery efforts on the impacted critical transport infrastructure and regional productivity are continuing. It will be some time before the region’s economy has fully recovered.
The strategy looks beyond the economic recovery phase towards long-term diversification opportunities across the region’s key sectors of resources, agriculture, tourism and business and industry. It aims to enhance the investment environment, strengthen supply chains and build sustainable communities.
The Draft North West Queensland Economic Diversification Strategy ( 4.6 MB) was released for public consultation between 30 May and 26 July 2019.
The draft strategy proposes 12 initiatives. These will assist building economic resilience through key sectors:
- business and industry.
During this time, the department engaged with a diverse range of stakeholders including local and commonwealth government, industry associations, peak bodies, representatives from community and Indigenous organisations, resource companies and chambers of commerce.
The information gathered throughout the consultation process will be used to refine the scope of initiatives in the final North West Queensland Economic Diversification Strategy which is anticipated for release in late 2019.
