Mareeba's projected population growth is being catered for with upgrades to the wastewater treatment plant that will also deliver environmental benefits for the receiving waters of Two Mile Creek.

This project is estimated to save council around $200,000 in operating and maintenance costs per year over the 20-year life of the treatment plant—a total of around $4 million.
These savings will be invested in other critical projects such as the refurbishment and upgrade of the existing sewerage reticulation network.
Increasing capacity from 9000 equivalent persons (currently servicing an equivalent person population of 10,000, including industrial trade waste and landfill leachate) to 12,500—and allowing for expansion to 16,500—will enable development of several residential and commercial developments either planned or underway.
Council expects construction to support up to 30 FTE jobs, with a further 25 employed from support industries for an estimated 266 days. A further 15 FTE positions will be supported during the 75-day commissioning period.
The upgraded plant will indirectly benefit the whole region and support current indirect employment for 2648 full-time workers, plus 1207 part-time workers, based on 2011 Census figures.
Meeting legislative guidelines for odour control will reduce the number of complaints from nearby residential and industrial properties.
Adhering to best practice guidelines will improve safety standards for all staff.
The quality of effluent being released into Two Mile Creek, a tributary of the Mitchell catchment, will meet and exceed conditions under the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection’s Environmental Authority.
The improved bio-solids can be reused as fertiliser for sugar cane, avocados, bananas, mangoes, lychees and cropping pastures.
