Boulia's 250 residents, plus the thousands of tourists who fill up before heading to and from the Great Sandy Desert, can look forward to better quality drinking water when a new roof is installed on the 1140kL reservoir, removing the danger of contamination from birds and animals.

Building our Regions funding means council can deliver this project without placing a huge burden on the shire’s small population.
Plumbers, concreters, metal fabricators, truck drivers and labourers will be employed during construction.
A reliable water supply enables council's 46 staff to continue providing services to the community, and makes the town a more desirable stopover for thousands of tourists.
It also ensures the ongoing operations of businesses and services such as Boulia State School, the Primary Health Care Centre, sports complex and pool, Australian Hotel, Desert Sands Motel and the caravan park.
By reducing the risk of contamination, the ongoing costs of treatment and purification will be reduced.
The new roof will protect the water from contamination by animals, dust and sunlight, and reduce the risk of water-borne health issues for residents as well as the estimated 14,000 tourists who visit each year for the camel and picnic races, the Min Min Encounter Show, fossil displays, Big Red Bash, Birdsville Races and other Outback activities.
Current best practice drinking water standards will be met, reducing the likelihood of boiled water alerts due to contamination.
Meeting building standards with safer access, hand rails and lockable hatches will ensure the health and safety of staff.
Council’s drinking water management plan and continued work with the Department of Environment and Heritage Protection will ensure water standards are met for a safe and reliable water supply.
The likelihood of algae blooms will be reduced and animals and birds will be prevented from entering the reservoir.
