Coordinating the energy transition
To make things possible for a better Queensland, we're taking a hands-on approach to Queensland’s energy transition. The Office of the Coordinator-General will leverage technical expertise, strong working relationships across government and industry, and our unique powers to coordinate Queensland’s transition to a clean energy future.
The energy transition is a once-in-a-generation opportunity to shape a clean, thriving economy, and we are working to deliver the benefits of a successful economic transition to regional Queensland.
Renewable energy zones
The Office of the Coordinator-General has partnered with the Department of Energy and Climate and Powerlink (REZ delivery body) to deliver renewable energy zones (REZs) across Queensland. A REZ is an area suitable for wind and solar development that is strategically planned to connect multiple energy generators and deliver better local outcomes.
REZ readiness assessments
The first step towards delivering these REZs is carrying out REZ readiness assessments.
A REZ readiness assessment is prescribed under the Energy (Renewable Transformation and Jobs) Act 2024. It involves a detailed or strategic assessment of how ready communities are to host a REZ. As part of our partnership with the Department of Energy and Climate and Powerlink, we’re providing technical advice and insights to inform the development of these assessments with a focus on environmental, social and economic impacts.
The REZ readiness assessments will identify:
- the local community’s readiness to host a REZ
- how the local community can benefit from a REZ across its lifespan
- options to overcome barriers, enhance benefits and minimise cumulative impacts.
The findings of REZ readiness assessments are informing the Coordinator-General’s role in REZ delivery and the Government’s response to a region's readiness and potential declaration.
Renewables facilitation and project delivery focus
The Office of the Coordinator-General has traditionally played a role in major project facilitation and delivery through our statutory and coordination powers under the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971. We are exploring how we can leverage the unique powers of the Coordinator-General to ensure a successful regional transition and make Queensland the jurisdiction of choice for sustainable renewable energy development.
