Social impact assessments for resource projects

Resource projects completing an environmental impact statement (EIS) process under either the State Development and Public Works Organisation Act 1971 (SDPWO Act) or Environmental Protection Act 1994 (EP Act) are required to also complete a social impact assessment (SIA) in accordance with the Coordinator-General’s SIA Guideline ( 307.0 KB).

The Coordinator-General evaluates the EIS for resource projects assessed as coordinated projects under the SDPWO Act, including the SIA.

For resource projects assessed under the EP Act, the Department of Environment and Science evaluates the project’s EIS, and the Coordinator-General assesses the SIA.

As part of evaluating a resource project's SIA, the Coordinator-General must decide whether the 100 per cent fly-in, fly-out (FIFO) prohibition and anti-discrimination provisions of the SSRC Act should apply to the project’s construction workforce. These provisions automatically apply to a large resource project’s operational workforce.
