SEQ digital twin
A digital twin is a precise digital replica of physical assets closely mimicking their behaviour and characteristics. In simple terms, a digital twin helps integrate disparate data sets that would otherwise be a challenge to combine.
When applied to the built environment, digital twins can support many layers of data, representing utilities (above and below ground), buildings, bridges, roads, parks and more. By aligning these datasets in their precise spatial location, it becomes possible to visualise entire cities or regions.
The State Infrastructure Strategy recognises the value of investigating a digital twin to help plan, predict, and understand Queensland’s infrastructure. This could help improve decision-making through more effective use of data.
The 2023-24 State Budget saw the allocation of some preliminary funding to progress this investigation. Work is now underway to deliver a proof of concept and a program implementation plan.
This initiative is exploring opportunities to manage the built environment as an interconnected system, fostering more coordinated land and infrastructure planning, delivery and operations, and potential to support the successful delivery of Brisbane 2032.
